In another edition of Stop Writing Alone Behind the Scenes, I thought I would share a bare bones view of a Poetry Prompt Party.
What is a Poetry Prompt Party?
The Stop Writing Alone Poetry Prompt Party is a live gathering of writers interested in writing poetry. We show up on Zoom, have a light chat and then I introduce a writing prompt to the group. The prompts are usually taken from prompt tools such as prompt workbooks, dice, or card games all created for the purpose of inspiring poets. I then set a timer for 15 minutes, muting all participants, so everyone can write. At the end of the time, we each read aloud what we have drafted. For some writers this is a beautifully crafted verse that you swear they have been working on for decades, for others of us, the time may be used to scribble noddle-y notes of the poem you can kind of see growing out of this moment. It all depends, and it is all welcomed. Everyone’s process is different!
After the party it is up to the respective writers to decide the destiny of their product. For some, the activity served its purpose and they are done, for others, the live call is just the beginning and they continue to work on the piece until it finds its audience.

“Bookshop.org works to connect readers with independent booksellers all over the world. We believe local bookstores are essential community hubs that foster culture, curiosity, and a love of reading, and we're committed to helping them thrive. Every purchase on the site financially supports independent bookstores. Our platform gives independent bookstores tools to compete online and financial support to help them maintain their presence in local communities."
